The Rhythm Of Philadelphia

by Dyymond Whipper-Young

“The Rhythm of Philadelphia” mural is a tribute to “The Sound Of Philadelphia" genre created by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, which took the music industry by storm in the 1970s. "The Sound of Philadelphia" is also the title of a 1974 hit record written by Gamble and Huff that became the theme song for Soul Train, the famous television show that highlighted African American music and culture. This label was home to stars such as Patti Labelle, The O'Jays, and Teddy Pendergrass. Philadelphia Soul paved the way for funk and R&B music and has influenced artists such as Jay-Z, Mariah Carey, and Outkast while continuing to influence many more. On the mural is a QR code entitled “Scan To Dance” that leads you to a playlist of top hits produced by Philadelphia International Records and songs that have been sampled from Philadelphia Soul.
